39 and Counting

I was born on a Wednesday in March of 1969, in Walnut Creek California, a suburb of San Fransisco, and this is the year that I turn 40. As I approach this milestone year, I do so with mild irritation at the prospect of getting older, but I am hopeful that 40 will be better than 39. I plan to be Fabulous at 40!

The purpose of this blog is to help me process all that comes with turning and then being 40. So, to all my friends, male and female, who have successfully reached this, oh so special rite of passage, please comment and offer advise on what I should do, and how I should handle turning 40. For those who have yet to ponder what 40 is, I want to hear from you too; as I am sure you will also have comments and or advise that will be useful.

Well, here I am less than two months from The Day, and I take a moment to reflect on what 39 has been for me. I will be really honest, 39 SUCKED. Personally and professionally, 39 has been emotionally draining for me, and I will not cry many tears on Thursday, March 12, 2009.

On the personal front, my mom has had a lot of health issues all of which were related to the complications and hideous effects of diabetes. My sisters and I, there are four of us in all, feared for several months that we were going to lose her; but she pulled through, and she is as sassy and spunky as ever. I get a tremendous amount of joy laughing out loud when we have our near daily mom is quite funny. My sisters and I are so blessed to still have our mom; we love her a lot, and even though I am almost 40 and the oldest is 55 we still need our Mommy. :)

Professionally, well let's just say it's been rough, I did not work for several months and that took a great toll on my savings and retirement, but I have turned a corner. I recently started with a new company which has entrusted me with a property which will be a challenge, but offers tremendous opportunity for me. My new boss rocks and I so deserve to have a great boss; you have no idea how bad the last one was. I am going to gain a lot of knowledge from my new boss...I am so lucky. I work for a great company and I work for a fabulous woman who is a wealth of knowledge; she actually knows more than me and I know a lot about the industry since I have been at it for 16 years. There is nothing worse than working for someone who has no idea how to do his or her own job. I work with great people who know what they are doing, they are smart, and they have a great deal of integrity, and I enjoy being at work. What more could I ask for?

In the twilight of 39, a new decade is on the horizon. My personal and professional life is in balance; 40 is starting to look damn good!

  1. Everyone tells me that 40 is the "new 30" so, if it's true, this next decade for us should be fantastic! I'm so glad you're enjoying your new job. I still don't know for sure what it is that you do. It sounds like property mgmnt of some sort. Fill me in on the details. It sounds interesting.
Great start to your blog - can I add you to my faves on my blog roll? :)

PS - loved the comment about "the real LVHS" on your "about me" section. That's how I always describe it when asked where I went to HS.

  2. at least you're not turning 50:) LOL

just checking to see if the comments work...

  3. CONGRATULATION, welcome to my world! Enjoy it, embrace it, love it!!!Despite of where you are placed on the diagram of life, you are still breathing life into that body of yours and there is no way that you have passed your "Used By Date". So enjoy it. Like you said,"40 is starting to look damn good!"

  4. Oh, I have found 40+ to be very difficult . . . and I have already shrunk an inch. I wish I could say this decade is going to be fabulous, but I'm still waiting and unsure.

  5. It's not as bad as you think. Start thinking of yourself now. This is the time to start living and have adventures. Turning 40 was bad at first but each year does get better. Maybe the older we get, we just don't care what other people think. You have much to offer and now is the time to start enjoying life, But the body does start to fall to shit each year that goes by.
